The Abbey Golf Pro-am sponsored by Carlsberg

The 4 star Abbey Hotel, Golf and Spa in Redditch staged the Abbey Hotel Midland PGA Pro-Am, sponsored by Carlsberg on Wednesday 14th September.

With a prize fund of £2500, the 18 hole event attracted a field of top class Professionals from around the Midlands - including former Ryder Cup hero and 7 time European Tour winner, Paul Broadhurst. A total of 17 teams participated (teams consisted of 3 amateurs and a Professional) with total amateur prizes of a value of £4000.

On a fine day, with the course in superb condition and super fast greens, the Professionals found the course a tough but fair challenge. The event was a shotgun start where each team begins their rounds at the same time from different holes.

Paul Streeter from Lincoln Golf Club began his round on the 12th hole and after starting with 3 straight birdies, went straight to the top of the leader board - but eventually faltered on the fantastic new second hole par 3, finding the water from his tee shot after going directly for the difficult pin placement. His final score of 71 (1 under par) was still good enough for 2nd place.

The eventual winning Professional was Matt Cort from Rothley GC in Leicester. Matt also has a fine golfing pedigree, a former European Tour Professional himself for 3 years notching up 2 top 10 finishes & has also competed in 2 British Opens. He put together a fine round of 69 (-3) A new course record which included an eagle 2 on the newly constructed 15th hole. During his victory speech Matt thanked the main sponsors of the event – Carlsberg, and also said, “this is the first time I have played The Abbey and thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic layout of the course and brilliant greens”.

The winning team from Atherstone GC was lead by Paul Broadhurst with a score of -9 although he himself found the course tough going and only managed a 75 (+3).

Cordinator of the event, The Abbey's Head Professional, Rob Davies remaked, “We are very pleased with how the day went and I was delighted with the high class field of Professionals who entered. I received many positive comments about the day itself and the quality of the golf course from both my fellow Professionals and amateurs. Next year we hope to attract an even bigger field and make The Abbey Pro-Am one the largest Golf events in the Midlands”.
