Abbey Hotel, Golf and Spa Hosts the Annual Battle Back Golf Championships

In early autumn the 4* Abbey Hotel, Golf and Spa, Redditch provided the perfect venue for the final Battle Back Golf event of the year - the Annual Championships. Twenty-six of the total cohort of 125 Battle Back Golfers (pictured below) took to the Abbey’s beautifully designed and manicured course in an attempt to be crowned the 2013 yourgolftravel.com Battle Back Golf Champion.

This prestigious event is considered the third Battle Back Golf major of the year and consequently competition for the title is intense. In addition, the event provides the last chance to influence the committee who elect the “most improved player” of the year.

One arm, no legs, spinal injury, brain tumour, PTSD; golf’s unique handicap system allows the golfers to compete on a “level playing field”. The competition was decided on an individual stableford score (adapted to golfing handicap) and the awards dinner that followed the event saw WO2 Lofty Taylor, with a score of 37 points, announced as the 2013 yourgolftravel.com Battle Back Champion.

After an astonishing return of 2½ points out of a possible 3 at the Capt Pietsch Trophy and for remarkable development throughout the year Maj Bernie Broad was awarded the most improved player of the year.

The texas scramble team event on the following day allowed for the cobwebs of the previous night’s festivities to be blown away and rounded up the golf for another year.
“We at Battle Back Golf cannot express our immense gratitude to yourgoftravel.com for arranging this event and their on-going support over the past 4 years” said Lt Col Crew the officer in charge of Battle Back Golf. “Our sincerest thanks also goes to the Abbey Hotel for their generous hospitality. The hotel and their staff were not only exceptionally welcoming they were also wholly appreciative of our injured service personnel.”

Chief Technician Keith Davies, RAF remarked “Whilst the direction of my life has much been dictated by doctors and consultants over the past few years, Battle Back Golf and events like these have provided a very welcome distraction from my condition. I extend my sincerest gratitude to yourgolftravel.com and the Abbey Hotel for their support which has, in no doubt, enriched the lives of all in attendance.”
